Product photos that sell, shot on your phone

No studio needed. Light, background and a fixed set of angles do most of the work.

Online, the photo is the product. The customer can't touch it, so the picture has to answer their questions before they ask. The good news: a recent phone, a window and a plain wall are enough.

Use daylight, not the flash

Shoot next to a window during the day, with the light coming from the side. Turn the flash off — it flattens texture and adds harsh shine. If the shadows are too dark, hold a white sheet of paper or card on the other side to bounce light back.

Keep the background plain and the same

A white or light grey wall, a sheet, or a large piece of card works. The same background across all your products makes your store look like one brand instead of a pile of screenshots.

Shoot the same set of angles every time

Pick a set and stick to it: front, back, a close-up of the detail or fabric, the product in use or worn, and one shot that shows size (in a hand, next to a common object). Customers learn where to look, and you stop answering "how big is it?" in chat.

Every MartMint plan lets you add several photos per product. Use all of them — a product with one photo looks like it's hiding something.

Edit lightly

Straighten, crop to the same shape for every product, and fix brightness. Skip heavy filters: if the colour in the photo doesn't match the colour that arrives, you'll get a return and an unhappy customer. Show small flaws honestly on second-hand or handmade items — it builds trust.

The bottom line

Good light, a plain background, a fixed set of angles and honest colour. Set it up once in a corner of your room and every new product takes ten minutes to photograph.
